About the World Athletics Championships Beijing 27

The World Athletics Championships Beijing 27 will take place from 10–19 September 2027 in Beijing, China. The 21st edition of the World Athletics Championships will bring the world's leading athletes back to Beijing, twelve years after the city hosted the 2015 World Championships.

The 2027 Championships will be staged at Beijing's iconic National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, and will feature ten days of international athletics competition.

Dates and Venue

Competition Dates Updated

World Athletics originally scheduled the Championships for 11–19 September 2027. Following a request from the local organising committee, the World Athletics Council approved revised dates of Friday 10 September through Sunday 19 September 2027.

The additional day allows the opening ceremony to take place on 10 September alongside the first competition session and enables an evening competition session on each of the ten days.

Global Athletics Competition

The World Athletics Championships bring together elite athletes from around the world across track and field, road running, race walking and combined events.

World Athletics expects more than 2,000 athletes from approximately 200 member federations to compete during the Beijing 27 Championships.

Competition Disciplines

The World Athletics competition calendar identifies Beijing 27 as covering combined events, road running, race walking, track and field.

National Stadium – Bird's Nest

The National Stadium is the principal competition venue for Beijing 27. Known internationally as the Bird's Nest, the stadium was the main stadium of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and previously hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2015.

The return of the World Athletics Championships to the stadium in 2027 creates a connection between Beijing's previous hosting of the event and its new generation of international sporting infrastructure.

Beijing and International Sport

Beijing will become the first Chinese city to host the World Athletics Championships twice. The 2027 event follows the city's successful hosting of the 2015 edition.

World Athletics describes Beijing 27 as an international showcase combining athletics with cultural heritage, technological innovation and international exchange.

Culture and Technology

The Beijing 27 concept incorporates cultural and technological elements alongside the sporting programme. World Athletics describes the event as an opportunity to connect cultural richness, technological innovation, inclusive participation and international sporting competition.

Official Event Identity

The official Beijing 27 identity includes the logo name Jingyue and mascot Jingyan. The event slogan is “Each Step Counts”.

The visual identity draws on Beijing cultural elements and athletics, including references to the Temple of Heaven, Chinese character forms, traditional kite patterns and Peking Opera-inspired design elements.

Qualification and Entry

World Athletics has approved the qualification system and entry standards for Beijing 27. Qualification combines entry standards, designated competition results, wild cards and World Athletics rankings.

The qualification system aims for approximately 40 percent of athletes to qualify through entry standards and approximately 60 percent through world rankings.

The qualification periods vary according to discipline, with marathon, race walking, combined events, relays and other disciplines following specific qualification windows established by World Athletics.

Competition Programme

The final 2027 competition timetable has not yet been published. World Athletics has confirmed that the revised ten-day schedule will include an opening ceremony and first competition session on 10 September and evening competition sessions across all ten days.

Biskoon will update the event itinerary when World Athletics publishes and approves the detailed competition timetable.
